North Portland Recreation

Do you feel it in the air? Sure, we continue to be spoiled by seemingly perfect sunny days but with every chilly morning, we are inevitably more and more excited to break out our favorite sweaters from the closet and hunker down by the fireplace with a hot cup of joe. Ah, yes, fall is here!  Whether you’re enjoying dinner out on Mississippi Avenue or joining the local youth at the Skidmore Bluffs for a sunset, here are North Portland favorites to get you out of the house and beat the stir-crazy blues.

Traditions are Traditions for a Reason

October starts off with what is arguably one of North Portland’s favorite traditions—driving up to Sauvie Island to visit the beloved pumpkin patches. A short 20 minute drive north will lead you on a scenic and beautiful trip through the island. Among the lavender and berry farms are several popular pumpkin patches. These patches also offer other produce and farm-to-table products such as jams and baked goods. With huge themed corn mazes and rides for the little ones, these 100-acre farms are a North Portland favorites the whole family can enjoy.

Into the Wild!

If you’re looking for something a bit less crowded, look no further than The Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area. You can take the Interlakes Trail and catch a glimpse of a variety of wildlife, including beavers, river otters, black-tailed deer, osprey, bald eagles, and Western painted turtles. It is one of the nation’s largest protected urban wetland, which makes it perfect for a day of kayaking, hiking, or even geocaching. The Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area is surrounded by warehouse and port terminals which is why locals know it as the region’s “best kept secret”.

Enjoy what’s in your backyard

We all know and love Cathedral Park under the St. Johns Bridge. The dramatic gothic architecture and nearby Willamette make it the ideal location for picture perfect picnics, weddings, dates–you name it. There are many other North Portland favorites for you to explore as well. Kelley Point Park forms a peninsula at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia River. Follow the trails and choose from a variety of beaches to sit and enjoy the passing ships or snag a bonfire pit and bring good company. Pier Park is amazing for playing disk golf through its evergreen forest. Chimney Park is great for those with dogs.  Beat cabin fever this autumn and get out there and find your own North Portland favorite.
